EIGSC – February 2011 Lunch Recap

March 8, 2011

THE SHAFT

February’s EIGSC lunch was held on Tuesday the 15th at Taix’s in Echo Park. 39 people were in attendance for this meeting which included several guests of current members. There was not much new business but Scott Dutton did announced that CED is now distributing the newest edition of the National Electrical Code book, please see him if interested in a copy.

As of this month’s meeting the EIGSC has $11,941 in the bank and is doing well financially. Everyone should have received the annual membership invoice by now, if not, please check with an officer ASAP so we can scratch your name off the list. We have noticed some checks already coming in, thanks for the prompt responses. Also, to confirm all of our numbers are completely accurate, we will be hiring an outside accountant to audit our books. This audit will cost $400 but many believe it is worth the money after the confusion following last year’s golf tournament.

President Allan Lloyd announced that we have regained access to our website and can now make updates and changes. Please get with him should you have any suggestions for a better EIGSC website.

Eric Bleyle, the president of our sister group, the Elevator Industry Group of Northern California has asked for our help. He would like all of our members to add their name to a petition he is creating and he believes this will make our industry safer. The petition will ask the state to make it mandatory that the safeties of all elevators installed prior to 1998 be activated and tested annually. This code change would put us in line with several other states that have already made this change to their codes. Allan Lloyd will have more information about this petition in coming months.

After 45 years of holding the meetings at Taix’s, several members began talking about possibly changing the venue and 3 of the officers plus longtime member Stan Schultz met to discuss this over lunch. Several topics were debated but the ultimate goal was to find another nice establishment that could host our monthly meetings and a bigger holiday party while provide a good lunch and drinks at a comparable price. After more discussion during February’s meeting it was decided that most members do not see a need for this change and the topic will be put to rest for the time being.

This month’s speaker was Peter Callis from the city of Los Angeles’s dept of building and safety. He was kind enough to bring everyone a copy of the 2008 city elevator code book and went over it page by page answering questions as he went. He also showed us the city’s website which has several helpful tools for setting up inspections and getting questions answered. If anyone has any questions regarding code they can contact him at 310.914.3969. Next month we will have Janus presenting to the group.
