EIGSC’s Monthly Message – June 2013

June 20, 2013
In May, Jesse Franco of the El   Segundo Fire Department gave an informative presentation to our group.  He has extensive experience in high rise   fire fighting, code inspections, and compliance.

Franco’s presentation was on the   fire code related to the elevator lobby, elevator operation in Phase I and   Phase II.   He discussed in detail the   view point of an inspector, the criteria to meet code, and best practices   between elevator and fire alarm companies.

The History of the   Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation

In 1988, the National Association of Safety Authorities   International (NAESAI) established a committee to investigate the possibility   of forming a Foundation to educate the public, particularly children, on how   to safely ride elevators, escalators and moving walks.

A group made up of inspectors, suppliers and contractors   explored the task. The committee determined that in order to succeed, they   would need the entire elevator industry involved. The idea was presented to a   Bridge Builders meeting at the next National Association of Elevator   Contractors (NAEC) convention. The Bridge Builders had been established some   years earlier as an informal forum to bring together all of the industry’s   associations to identify mutual problems and preclude duplication of efforts   by the organizations. All of the major elevator manufacturing companies attended,   as well as the President and Executive Director of all the national   associations in the elevator industry.

A   Remembrance  to one of  our  members:

June Alex

Alexander Stephen Cargill Jr

Sep 29, 1919 – May 1, 2013

Alex was born September   29, 1919 in Montgomery, Alabama and grew up in Texas. He served in the United   States Navy during World War II and remained in California following the war.   Alex was a long time resident of Glendale and Burbank where he entered the   arms of Jesus May 1, 2013 at the age of 93. He is survived by a brother, John   Cargill, of Texas, two daughters, Nancy Choate of Colorado and Opal Lopez of   California, several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and   many close friends who were like family to him.
